"Downtown Countdown" New Year's Eve Celebration
The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will host Downtown Countdown, a New Year’s Eve celebration concert at the Bo Diddley Community Plaza. The free concert will begin at 9:30 p.m. and run until 12:30 a.m. At the stroke of midnight the sounds of noisemakers passed out to the audience earlier in the evening will chorus in the New Year.
A perennial "Free Fridays" favorite, The Impostors play a great selection of Beatles' favorites from the popular hits of the early heydays, through the experimental era of the "Revolver" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" albums, to the "Abbey Road" album and the final rooftop appearance. New songs added to their repertoire this year include "Penny Lane," "I Want You," "Lady Madonna," "Hey Bulldog," "Hey Jude," "I'll Get You," "Honey Don't" and "She's Leaving Home." The Impostors are also known to throw in some great covers of other groups such as The Byrds, The Hollies, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young and The Left Banke. The Impostors includes local musicians Michael Derry (guitar/vocals), Mike Boulware (guitar/vocals), Don David (guitar/vocals), Brad Bangstad (keyboards), Ron Thomas (bass/vocals) and Rob Rothschild (drums).
Crooked Counsel is fronted by vocalist Shuri Pass, who is originally from Starke, Fla. and now resides in Keystone Heights. Pass sings everything from Adele to Led Zeppelin and often gets compared to Janis Joplin, which she considers the ultimate compliment. Pass also plays acoustic guitar and can sometimes be found performing solo at local restaurants. Joining Pass are area musicians John Middleton (keyboards, guitar), Joe Loper (bass guitar), Nelda Loper (back-up vocals), Tim Sellers (drums, vocals) and Guido Lemeer (lead guitar).
The Bo Diddley Community Plaza is located on the corner of Southeast 1st Street and East University Avenue. The City of Gainesville Cultural Affairs Division is the designated local arts agency for Gainesville and Alachua County. Its mission is to promote cultural activity and encourage community based cultural resources.
